Former champions Karachi Kings have made significant changes to their squad before the highly anticipated Pakistan Super League (PSL) 10 player draft on January 11, 2025. One of the key decisions was the relegation of their captain, Shan Masood, who struggled to deliver impactful performances last season.

Shan Masood’s Leadership Challenges

Shan Masood, currently leading Pakistan in the Test series against South Africa, was appointed Karachi Kings’ captain last season. However, the team continued to miss out on playoff spots, a streak that began in 2021.

With the bat, Shan had a tough season, managing only 158 runs in 10 innings at an average of 15.8 and a strike rate of 105.8. These numbers did little to inspire confidence in his ability to change the team’s fortunes.

  • Shan Masood relegated after a disappointing performance.
  • Kings missed playoffs for the fourth consecutive season.
  • Batting form and team performance influenced the decision.

Additional Player Relegations

The Karachi Kings also relegated two other players: Hasan Ali and Zahid Mahmood. Both players were unable to make a significant impact during PSL 9.

Hasan Ali, traded from Islamabad United, showed promise with 14 wickets in 10 matches at an average of 22.42. However, the team’s management decided not to retain him.

Zahid Mahmood, a leg-spinner, picked up eight wickets in six games, but his performances were inconsistent.

Platinum Category Adjustments

Despite his relegation, Hasan Ali was promoted to the Platinum category, alongside notable players such as:

  • Mohammad Amir (Quetta Gladiators)
  • Saim Ayub (Peshawar Zalmi)
  • Usama Mir (Multan Sultans)

These promotions reflect the players’ individual potential, despite their team’s decisions.

Changes Across PSL Franchises

Other franchises have also made roster changes ahead of the PSL 10 draft. Three-time champions Islamabad United released left-arm pacer Rumman Raees, while Lahore Qalandars let go of opener Abdullah Shafique.

Meanwhile, 2021 champions Multan Sultans released left-arm wrist-spinner Faisal Akram. These decisions signal a broader trend of franchises prioritizing form and fitness over reputation.

Historic Draft in Gwadar

For the first time, the PSL draft will be hosted in Gwadar, Balochistan. This move underscores the league’s efforts to expand cricket’s reach within Pakistan.

The pick order for the draft has been finalized, with Lahore Qalandars set to make the first Platinum category pick, followed by their rivals, Karachi Kings. Quetta Gladiators and Peshawar Zalmi will pick third and fourth, respectively.

Here’s the order for the first round of the Platinum category:

  1. Lahore Qalandars
