Saim Ayub Leads Pakistan to 308 in Rain-Interrupted ODI Against South Africa

In the third ODI between Pakistan and South Africa at Johannesburg, Saim Ayub’s exceptional 101 anchored Pakistan’s innings, propelling them to a competitive 308 for 9 in 47 overs. This marked Ayub’s second century in the series and the third in his nine-match ODI career, solidifying his role as a key player.

Ayub’s efforts were complemented by half-centuries from captain Babar Azam (52) and Mohammad Rizwan (53). The innings was defined by a robust 114-run second-wicket partnership between Ayub and Babar, followed by a 93-run stand with Rizwan. Despite losing three quick wickets for 15 runs, Salman Agha (41 off 28) and Tayyab Tahir (33 off 19) accelerated the scoring with a brisk 74-run sixth-wicket partnership, ensuring Pakistan crossed the 300-mark.

South Africa’s bowlers struggled to contain the Pakistani batters. Kagiso Rabada (3 for 56) showed early promise, dismissing Abdullah Shafique for his third consecutive duck in the series. However, debutant Corbin Bosch and 18-year-old Kwena Maphaka conceded 119 runs between them in 15 overs. Spinners Bjorn Fortuin and Aiden Markram were economical, but the seamers proved expensive.

Rain delayed play for 75 minutes, adjusting South Africa’s target to 308. Despite challenging conditions, Ayub played aggressively, hitting boundaries across the field. He brought up his century off 91 balls before falling to Bosch. Rizwan, too, contributed with a steady fifty but fell soon after. Salman and Tayyab’s late flurry helped Pakistan post a formidable total, although a late collapse saw them lose four wickets for five runs.

South Africa, already trailing 2-0 in the series, faces an uphill battle to secure a consolation win.
